A modelling study of the respective role of hydrodynamic processes and larval mortality on larval dispersal and recruitment of benthic invertebrates: example of Pectinaria koreni (Annelida : Polychaeta) in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Ellien, C; Thiebaut, E; Dumas, Franck; Salomon, Jean-claude; Nival, Paul.
The dispersal of Pectinaria koreni larvae released from the eastern Bay of Seine (English Channel) was studied using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model which integrates tides, wind-driven currents and eddy diffusion, in order to examine the influence of environmental forcing and mortality on larval population dynamics. A broad agreement between predicted larval dispersal for two spawning events observed in 1987 and field data suggests that numerical modelling may be useful to analyse processes involved in the transport and the dynamics of larval populations. Larval mortality may be as important as hydrodynamic processes on larval losses for the adult population. Tides and eddy diffusion had some effects on larval dispersal, but wind forcing and the...

Choosing the best conditions for the cultivation of plankton in tanks is a difficult deal, which is generally solved by means of subjective estimations. A better way of looking for these conditions is the use of a mathematical model. _ We have tried to built a model that accounts for the physical and biological characteristics of the tanks. The data concerning the physiological characteristics of the different group of organisms encountered are too scarce to allow all of them to be taken into account. The system studied here is composed of nutrients, phytoplankton, herbivorous copepods and rotifers to which benthic algae have been added. With the hypothesis of 3 elements (phyto - zooplankton - nutrients) it can be showed that when an equilibrium is...

The concentration of chlorophyll a in large out-door continuous culture was analysed in spring 1977 and 1978, and autumn - winter 1977-1978. The growth of marine phytoplankton in springsl977 is analysed with more details and shows three phases : - first, the diatoms (especially Skeletonema costatum) grow rapidely (27/4 to 3/5). The growth rate estimated by the chlorophyll measurements is 1.36 day“1. - then (3/5 to.13/5) the concentration of chlorophyll remains more or less constant (23.611.2 mg/m3) as well as the concentration of particulate organic matter. - at the end of the experiment (13/5 to 20/5) the concentration of chlorophyll falls as soon as Skeletonema costatum decrease in number. The declin of the phytoplankton biomass is followed by an...

High frequency mesozooplankton monitoring: Can imaging systems and automated sample analysis help us describe and interpret changes in zooplankton community composition and size structure — An example from a coastal site ArchiMer
Romagnan, Jean-baptiste; Aldamman, Lama; Gasparini, Stephane; Nival, Paul; Aubert, Anais; Jamet, Jean Louis; Stemmann, Lars.
The present work aims to show that high throughput imaging systems can be useful to estimate mesozooplankton community size and taxonomic descriptors that can be the base for consistent large scale monitoring of plankton communities. Such monitoring is required by the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in order to ensure the Good Environmental Status (GES) of European coastal and offshore marine ecosystems. Time and cost-effective, automatic, techniques are of high interest in this context. An imaging-based protocol has been applied to a high frequency time series (every second day between April 2003 to April 2004 on average) of zooplankton obtained in a coastal site of the NW Mediterranean Sea, Villefranche Bay. One hundred eighty four...

Vertical distributions of macroplankton and micronekton in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestern Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Andersen, V; Francois, F; Sardou, J; Picheral, M; Scotto, M; Nival, Paul.
Vertical distributions and diel migrations at nineteen stations located in the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas (northwestem Mediterranean) are described in detail and compared for the main species of micronekton and macroplankton. Sampling was performed in April 1994 in the 0-700 m water column in most cases, down to 350, 450 or 550 m for the coastal or relatively shallow sites. Most of the twenty species showed similar distributions throughout the sampled area, either non-diel-migrating distributions such as the euphausiid Stylocheiron longicorne and the fish Cyclothone braueri, or clear diel-migrant behaviour (e.g. the siphonophore Chelophyes appendiculata and the euphausiid Euphausia krohni). Four species, the siphonophore Lensia conoidea, the pteropods...
